The Capabilities and Limitations of Using Microsoft Word Offline

As we mentioned, you can still use Microsoft Word without the internet. You can create a document, save it, and come back to work on it later. Moreover, you can open the saved document on your PC and work on them.

However, there are certain features of microsoft word that require an internet connection to work. For example, you will not be able to open or create a document in the cloud, which means you will not be able to access your documents from anywhere else other than the device you used in creating the document.

Another feature you cannot have access to when you’re offline is  its Share feature. You cannot share the document with others because you won’t be able to send it to the receiver without internet connection. The real-time collaboration feature will also not be available, as well as some other features like AutoSave, MS word add-ons, etc.

Can I Use Office 365’s MS Word and the Word Online Version Without an Internet Connection?

You can use MS Word in Office 365 without the internet, but you will need to be connected to the internet at least once every 30 days for your subscription to remain active. If you do not have an Office 365 subscription, then your subscription will be paused until you connect to the internet and sign in again. 

While using Office 365, you will have the same limitation as the stand-alone Microsoft Word application.

On the other hand, you will not be able to use Microsoft Word Online without the internet. The online version is a cloud-based application that requires an internet connection to work.


As you see, you can use Microsoft Word without the internet, but there are certain limitations. However, you can perform all the basic tasks like creating, editing and saving a document. Just a few features will be unavailable without the internet.
